Why is it that when you decide to stop drinking to better yourself, people automatically assume you have a “problem”? Isn’t it funny that society embraces every diet trend—vegan, low-carb, keto, Mediterranean, gluten-free—but if you say you’re alcohol-free, people tilt their heads and wonder what’s wrong with you?

That mindset needs to change. Choosing to live AF (alcohol-free) isn’t about a problem—it’s about making a positive, life-giving choice for your health, happiness, and future.

Why I Decided to Go Alcohol-Free

About 15 months ago, I made the decision to stop drinking—and I haven’t looked back. My main reason? Weight loss and health.

Every time I had a drink, it felt like a green light to overindulge in snacks. I was losing some weight, but not nearly where I wanted to be. In my late forties, weight loss was already harder, and alcohol was holding me back.

So, I tried giving up alcohol for just 30 days. Within that month, I noticed:

That was all I needed to know. What started as a month-long challenge turned into a permanent lifestyle. And honestly? I’ve never been happier.

The Benefits I’ve Experienced Living AF

1. Better Sleep

Let’s be real—wine might help you fall asleep, but it doesn’t help you stay asleep. I used to wake up at 1 a.m., toss and turn until 3 a.m., and then get slammed by my 4 a.m. alarm. I felt like I’d been hit by a truck.

Now? I fall asleep quickly, stay asleep, and wake up rested and energized. Every. Single. Day.

2. A Shift in Mindset

Being alcohol-free changed how I show up in life:

I even laugh more—like real, belly-deep, can’t-stop giggles. I feel closer to the people I love because I’m fully present in the moment.

3. Social Confidence

Yes, at first, social settings were tricky. Some people looked at me like I was missing out. But over time, they realized it’s not a big deal—and now they appreciate that I’m always the built-in designated driver.

I also make fun, fancy mocktails so I never feel left out. Sparkling water, lime, and mint in a pretty glass? Instant celebration.

Why You Should Try It

If you’ve ever wondered what life would feel like without alcohol, I encourage you to give it a try—just 30 days. Notice the difference in your sleep, your skin, your energy, your mood. You may just discover your best life AF.

If you’re walking through a challenging season, I encourage you not to turn to alcohol but to find healthy ways to cope. For inspiration, check out my post: How To Stay Sane In Crazy Times.

And if you find that you want to stop drinking but it feels too difficult to do on your own, please don’t hesitate to seek help. Talk to your doctor or reach out to Alcoholics Anonymous for support. You don’t have to do it alone.
